Betty LaDuke's Art and Story- Seventh Grade

Betty LaDuke is an AMAZING artist!  Please look her up!  A good friend of mine introduced me to her work in college and it instantly had a profound effect on me. She traveled extensively in Africa as well as all over the world and portrayed the stories and beliefs about Indigenous Cultures using symbolic imagery.

When introducing LaDuke's work to my seventh graders, they were given visual handouts of her work.  They then chose one image that resonated with them and speculated on the story that it told.  They then read about the actual symbolism of the image.

When starting the art project, students were asked to draw the image of their choice using variations of squares, circles and triangles.  After their drawing was done in pencil, they traced over it with permanent marker and chose their own colors to paint it with using metallic paint.

This is another LaDuke project I did with students in third through fifth grade.  I drew the design out and cut it into pieces making sure I numbered the back of each piece.  Each student was given a piece of the image and painted it using a monochromatic scheme.
