Winslow Homer Inspired Seascapes- Kindergarten

Students in Kindergarten were learning about Weather and Seasons for their Core Knowledge Unit.  After reviewing information, students were introduced to the seascapes of Winslow Homer (requirement for Visual Arts Core Knowledge for Kindergarten).  We talked about  what sort of weather and season they see in various paintings by Homer.

For the art project, students were instructed to fold the paper in half horizontally.  Half of the paper was painted with yellow and the other half was painted with pink liquid water colors.  Students were then given blue and orange tempera paint.  The half with the yellow was painted over with blue paint and the half with pink paint was painted over with orange paint.

Students were given scrapers like this:

I made my own out of cardboard squares by cutting out a zigzag line from one of the sides of the cardboard square.

They made wavy and/or zigzag movements with the scraper over the blue paint and scraped away the orange paint using straight lines.

After the paint was dry, I instructed them to place the precut triangles and trapezoids in an arrangement to resemble sailboats.  They glued one boat in the foreground and one in the middleground to create a sense of space.
