Kindergarten students looked at the artwork of Jacob Lawrence as a class and spoke about the shapes and colors they saw in his work. We also talked about how pictures can tell a story and how Jacob Lawrence was a "story painter". When our class discussion was complete, each student was given a piece of a Jacob Lawrence picture that I had previously drawn and cut. They were all given certain colors to work with and when they were done coloring the picture with chalk pastel, they put the pieces together like pieces of a puzzle. They were very excited with the results.
