Cityscape of Washington, DC- Second Grade

This cityscape was the last project of a unit about spatial relationships in art.  Students first did a seascape, then a landscape and then a cityscape.

I had students fold a piece of construction paper in half the long way (hotdog roll style). Students were then given different sizes of rectangles to glue along the folded line for the background.  Once they glued a row of rectangles for buildings, they colored them with different colors using chalk pastels.  I also provided them with small black squares for the windows.  After coloring with chalk pastels, they glued down the windows on each building.

The same process was repeated two more times for the middle ground and foreground.  The last step was to add the DC skyline once they identified the landmarks represented.  This was a great project for learning about overlapping techniques and foreground, middle ground and background.  It took around five days of 40 minute art classes which included a critique at the end.
